11A Worship - Peter Wants a Bath

Dr. Gregory Wagenfuhr

Greetings Friends in Christ!

We’re jumping back to Holy Week to talk about yet another time when Peter is bold enough to state his confusion. The gospel of John does not include the Last Supper, instead, it includes this event where Jesus washes his disciples’ feet. Why? John wants to be sure that his readers understand baptism and its relationship to the kingdom. Why should we care? Peter comes to understand that life in Jesus’ kingdom involves getting his feet dirty, but that the dirt does not corrupt him. This is the mode of being an ambassador: washed to be in the household, getting dirty in the world, and washing one another in service.
