9A Worship - X-Ray of the Heart

Jun 1, 2025    Curt McFarland

Every one of us longs for a friend, a spouse, a sibling, we can be completely honest with. We want to be able to share our deepest, darkest, secrets with SOMEONE. But fear typically holds us back. What if I spill the beans and then my relationship goes south, my marriage ends, my brother or sister turns on me … and they let the cat out of the bag? (as a side note … why would anyone try to keep a cat in a bag?)

Every one of us holds secrets we would rather not share with the world. Some are rather trivial, others monumental. In the complex history of our lives destructive behaviors, cruel thoughts, hurtful decisions, peculiar desires, are relegated to the closet, the vault, and we hide the key and try to not think about what’s behind the door.

There is ONE who already knows. We cannot hide from Him. He knows everything about us. Thankfully … He also loves us. That is another affirmation and miracle of Christian faith.

This morning we enter into the lives of Saul, Samuel, and a young nobody named David. The first, the current king. The second, the revered prophet of God. The third, the unlikely great future king of Israel. While each of us sees outward appearances, God views the heart. Nothing is hidden from Him.

How frightening … until one meets Him. That’s when fear turns to freedom, and shame to love.
