Our entire lives we have been offered competing definitions of love. Parents, friends, soap operas talk to us about love. A majority of the songs that have been written, the majority of movies that have been made, the majority of poems spoken, have had love as their central theme. And yet the messages we are bombarded with about love differ (in varying degrees) from the way we hope love can be and should be. There is another voice calling us to a deeper understanding of love. What definition of love will guide us? How can we know we are loved? How can we love others?

Four parables these Advent Sundays. Four parables taught by God Himself. Four parables that declare the message of Christmas. This morning’s parable, that of the two lost sons, takes us into the heart of God, the love of God, and back to His birth in Bethlehem.
