what is god up to?

lessons from habakkuk

On Sunday, May 10, Pastor Bill begins a new teaching series on the Old Testament book of Habakkuk - the 8th of the 12 minor prophets found at the end of the Old Testament (Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi). During a particularly evil time in Judah, the prophet wrestles with and questions God - what are you up to, God?
“O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear?” Habakkuk 1.2
Dear Grace of Christ Family,

I don’t know about you, but I did not imagine that we would still be practicing social distancing and staying at home.  I don’t know if I was prepared for the long haul.  I can endure for two weeks, maybe a month; it can be a bit of exhausting to continue doing what we are doing and not knowing when it will ever end.  Give me a timeline, deadline, and I’m good.  I may procrastinate, but at least I know there’s a finish line, and I will do what I have to do to finish well.

In the meantime, I know that nothing is ever wasted by God.  He is truly doing something during this global pandemic.  I may not know what He is doing, but I know that He is using this time to develop His people, His Church, His Kingdom, for His glory.  I do not question that God is up to something.  I just don’t know exactly what He is up to.

"In the meantime, I know that nothing is ever wasted by God..."

This is not the only time in history that Christians may have wondered what God was up to. This is not the only time in history where people have been thrown into chaos and sought some kind of answer, spiritual or not.  Pearl Harbor.  9/11. Oklahoma Bombing.  Dark Ages. Civil War. Holocaust.  That’s just to name a few.  Coronavirus – COVID-19 is now added to that list.

Habakkuk, a prophet during some very difficult times for the Israelites, had questions for God.  Was God listening to his prayers?  What are you going to do?  How long, O Lord?  Those are similar questions God’s people have had throughout mankind’s entire existence.  It’s probably questions we have right now.

We will look at some of God’s answers to Habakkuk’s questions, and our own, as we study this small but powerful book in the Old Testament.  I think we will be surprised at what God was up to back then, as well as what God might be up to in 2020.

Because of Christ, and in His Grace,
Pastor Bill
