PRAYER LETTER

PRAYER MATTERS

Philippians 4.4 “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”

Jeremiah 33.3 “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”

This week marked one year without Mom. I can’t believe a year has gone by already. The morning of her deathiversary (is that a word?!) as I put on my springiest yellow top (mom’s favorite color), I thought to myself, I should have stayed home from work today; I’m going to be a weepy mess! Instead, I stopped at Essencia on my way into work. Ordered their delicious dark chocolate brownies (mom’s go-to decadent treat.) I cut them into bite-size squares and shared with staff. (She always cut chocolate into small pieces, passed them around, and hid the remainder for another day. As my cousin said, she was the master of moderation!) During my extended lunch hour, I clipped the most fragrant, stunning lilacs from my neighbor’s tree, combining them with my lilacs, peonies, tarragon (another favorite), and a pretty yellow plant who has no name – I took them to my parent’s graves. Friends reached out during the day, hugs were shared, our family shared sweet memories over text and phone calls. My day ended with a friend (who wasn’t aware of the significance of the day) giving me flowers for May Day. They were yellow! I told them what a gift from heaven that was.

The most surprising part of my day was not only the peace I felt, but the freedom. I felt a release of pressure within my body that I had been clinging to this last year. I remembered a dream my friend had shared with me right after my mom was admitted to the hospital last year. She hadn’t heard the news yet but dreamt one night that I was standing in front of a wall of books. She woke up, thought nothing of it, went back to sleep and had that same dream again. So, she asked the Lord what it meant, and she heard “Ericka is free to write her own story.” I’ve sat with that word for the last year; it felt hopeful and promising. It felt like a gift from God. But it didn’t feel solid. Until the other day. That freedom I felt on Wednesday was from God. He is calling me to be the person He created me to be. Not the person that is trying to do all the things, and please all the people. He wants me to be me. Live my story.

I am not saying my connection to my mom and dad was negative – quite the opposite. It’s just over the years, I’ve morphed into someone who, in most all of my relationships, goes with the flow and doesn’t take the opportunity to voice my own wishes. God is restoring in me confidence and boldness to write my story (as I seek God’s will), and to live it out loud!

Giving Praise,
Ericka
